Description
Canon EOS RP Overview
The Canon EOS RP impresses with its compact size while housing a large full-frame sensor, providing versatile imaging capabilities in a portable design. Boasting a high-resolution 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and a DIGIC 8 image processor, the camera allows for the capture of both high-quality stills and UHD 4K videos across a wide sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 40000, catering to various lighting conditions. It supports continuous shooting at up to 5 fps for capturing dynamic subjects. The sensor also incorporates an advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF system with 4779 on-sensor phase-detection points, ensuring swift and precise focus acquisition during both still and video operations.
In addition to the sensor and processor, the Canon EOS RP features a 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.0″ 1.04m-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD monitor, facilitating easy viewing from different angles. With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, the camera allows for wireless remote control and direct image sharing to connected mobile devices.
Canon RF Lens Mount
The EOS RP is equipped with the RF lens mount, supporting Canon’s RF-mount lenses. This mount, characterized by a wide 54mm diameter and a short 20mm flange-back distance, enables the design of faster and more compact lenses compared to SLR equivalents. The mount incorporates a 12-pin electronic contact system for advanced autofocus and image stabilization. Compatibility with existing EF and EF-S-mount lenses is achieved through an optional EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.
26.2MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 8 Image Processor
Featuring a 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, the EOS RP strikes a balance between high-resolution output, low-light performance, and high-speed capabilities. Teamed with the DIGIC 8 image processor, the camera offers a broad native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 40000, and it supports continuous shooting at up to 5 fps for capturing moving subjects.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
The Dual Pixel CMOS AF system ensures smooth and rapid focusing performance, akin to a camcorder’s focus acquisition. With two separate photodiodes in each pixel, it provides a dense phase-detection network across the image sensor, reducing focus hunting for precise control over focus placement. The system excels in quickly and accurately acquiring focus for still photography, making it ideal for capturing and tracking moving subjects. In video shooting, Movie Servo AF mode delivers smooth and natural focusing transitions between subjects or distances, with customizable tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face or Eye Tracking priority. The Touch AF system allows for intuitive rack focus by touching elements on the touchscreen. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF is sensitive down to EV -5, ensuring accurate autofocus in low-light conditions.
UHD 4K Video Recording
Catering to multimedia creators, the EOS RP supports UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution recording at up to 23.98 fps at 120 Mb/s. It also offers Full HD 1080p and HD 720p at 60 fps for slow-motion playback. In-camera 4K video has 4:2:0 sampling and 8-bit color depth, while 4:2:2 8-bit output is possible with an external recorder. Audio recording options include the on-board stereo microphone or an external microphone connected via the 3.5mm mic jack. The 5-axis Dual Sensing IS reduces the appearance of camera shake when recording video, ensuring sharper and smoother footage.
Body Design
The camera’s integrated 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder provides a bright and clear means for eye-level viewing, while the rear 3.0″ 1.04m-dot LCD features a vari-angle design for convenient use at high, low, and front-facing angles. It also serves as a touchscreen for intuitive control over shooting, playback, and menu navigation. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enable wireless sharing, control, and image transfer with compatible smart devices via the Canon Camera Connect app, supporting geotagging using the mobile device’s location data. In-camera charging over USB facilitates on-the-go charging convenience.
EOS Webcam Utility
Expanding the camera’s capabilities, Canon’s EOS Webcam Utility software transforms the EOS RP into a versatile webcam when connected to a computer via USB. Compatible with various streaming apps such as ZOOM, YouTube Live, Microsoft Teams, and more, the software allows for internal recording while livestreaming
