Description

Overview of Nikon Zf

Nikon’s Zf Mirrorless Camera marks an impressive entry into their series of digital throwbacks, blending vintage aesthetics with cutting-edge technology. Resonating with the classic charm of filmic SLRs, the Zf’s exterior design evokes a nostalgic steel-feel functionalism, concealing advanced Z-series features within. This amalgamation results in a modern, tactile shooter that seamlessly integrates advanced tech to produce timeless imagery.

Immersive and User-Centric Design

Inspired by the iconic FM2, the Zf boasts machined edges, knurled dials, and a marbled texture, immersing users in the tactile joy of operating a finely crafted machine. Crafted from precision-carved aluminum, the dials for shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation offer superb manual control with engraved markings. The mechanical shutter’s audible click adds to the vintage experience. Additionally, it provides a dedicated black-and-white mode featuring two monochrome recipes.

The intuitive design extends beyond retro-styled controls. The electronic viewfinder, nestled in a prism-shaped housing, allows manipulation via the 3.2″ vari-angle rear LCD screen, enabling seamless focus point adjustments, subject tracking, and display mode toggling while maintaining eye contact with the viewfinder. The rear screen, fully articulating and front-facing, facilitates easy navigation and operation at varying angles.

Key Design Features:

  • Dual memory card slots (SD and microSD) offering flexible file storage options.
  • Robust magnesium alloy chassis providing dust and weather resistance for operation in harsh conditions.
  • Compatibility with optional MC-N10 Remote Grip and AR-11 Soft Shutter Release.

Full-Frame Sensor and High-Speed Processor

24.5MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor:

The 24.5MP BSI CMOS sensor ensures exceptional image quality across diverse shooting scenarios, excelling in low-light conditions while enabling swift readout speeds for continuous shooting, video recording, and time-lapse sequences. Its back-illuminated design produces clean, high-sensitivity output, minimizing noise at higher ISO settings. The Zf introduces a high-resolution photo mode, amalgamating multiple exposures into a single 96MP file.

EXPEED 7 Image Processor:

Leveraging the potent processing engine from the Z9 and Z8, the EXPEED 7 Image Processor collaborates with the sensor design, delivering rapid autofocus, burst shooting rates, ample buffer capacity, fluid video performance, and overall swift handling. Deep Learning technology enhances an auto mode that adjusts aperture, ISO, and shutter speed based on shooting situations, facilitating effortless capture of portraits with pleasing background blur or sharp group shots.

Advanced Video Capabilities, Autofocus, and Stabilization

UHD 4K Recording and Video Control:

The Zf introduces a shutter-priority exposure mode for recording at fixed shutter speeds while smoothly adjusting ISO and aperture to maintain consistent brightness. With oversampled 6K, UHD 4K video recording at up to 30p and Full HD 1080p video at up to 120p for slow motion playback, it caters to diverse video needs. It allows internal recording for up to 125 minutes directly onto memory cards in 10-bit H.265 across SDR/HLG/N-log tone modes.

Fast and Intelligent AF:

Employing Deep Learning technology akin to Z9 and Z8 models, the Zf’s autofocus system recognizes and accurately tracks various subjects, including people, pets, birds, and objects like bicycles, cars, and aircraft. The Eye-Detection AF for photo and video now extends to manual focus lenses, swiftly locking onto and magnifying the eyes for precise focus confirmation, even with tiny subjects.

Vibration Reduction:

The in-body 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction compensates for up to 8 stops of camera shake when paired with Z-mount lenses, enabling significantly slower shutter speeds without image blur. This stabilization extends to adapted F-mount lenses with the optional FTZ Adapter, employing 3-axis stabilization. Furthermore, the focus point vibration reduction system offers precise stabilization around the active focus point in the frame.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 (SE) Lens:

The lens boasts a vintage-inspired design, straddling wide-angle and normal fields of view with a bright f/2 maximum aperture. Versatile for spontaneous shooting, portraiture, and selective focus, its compact form suits FX or DX-format camera bodies. The stepping motor AF system ensures quiet and smooth focusing, while the programmable control ring allows intuitive adjustments over various camera and exposure settings.

This Special Edition lens sports a retro-inspired design with checked knurling, a contrasting silver band, and a vintage NIKKOR logo resembling classic Nikon FM film camera lenses. Its optical design incorporates aspherical elements, a Super Integrated Coating, and a specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism, delivering sharpness, reduced aberrations, minimal flare, and smooth bokeh.

The rounded nine-blade diaphragm enhances out-of-focus quality, ideal for shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
