Description

Nikon Z8 Overview

Streamlined, Portable, High-Performance Camera

Harnessing the essence of flagship technology, the Nikon Z8 is a compact and lightweight camera that encapsulates much of the innovation found in the Z9 but in a more portable and sleek design. Positioned as the ultimate hybrid camera, the Z8 boasts the same cutting-edge sensor, processing capabilities, and autofocus prowess as its flagship counterpart, housed in a redesigned body that enhances usability for gimbal operation, event shooting, and various handheld applications.

Flagship Sensor and Processing Power

Featuring a 45.7MP Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor

The Z8 inherits its sensor from the Z9, incorporating a 45.7MP FX-format BSI stacked CMOS sensor. This sensor delivers a compelling blend of resolution, rapid readout speeds, exceptional clarity, and minimal noise. The stacked design minimizes rolling shutter, while the BSI technology ensures improved noise levels at higher ISO settings. The 45.7MP resolution and full-frame sensor size strike a balance, benefiting photographers in detail-oriented genres and enabling 8K video recording.

EXPEED 7 Image Processor

Paired with the sensor is the EXPEED 7 processing engine, performing at speeds approximately 10 times faster than the Z7 II. This dynamic duo ensures remarkable autofocus speeds, high burst shooting rates, an extensive buffer capacity, smooth video performance, and overall responsive handling.

Impressive Shooting Capabilities

The Z8 achieves top continuous shooting speeds of 20 fps in raw, 30 fps in JPEG, 60 fps in 19MP JPEGs using a DX area, and an astonishing 120 fps when capturing 11MP stills—all supporting full AF/AE performance. The camera can buffer over 1000 raw images in a burst, allowing for approximately 50 seconds of continuous raw image sequences. The Pre-Release Capture feature records frames in a burst up to a second before fully pressing the shutter, facilitating decisive moment shots. The electronic shutter provides a top speed of 1/32,000 sec for bright conditions with wider apertures, and the stacked sensor design reduces rolling shutter distortion for fast-moving subjects.

Advanced Features and Formats

The Z8 introduces an Electronic Shutter-Only Design, relying solely on the electronic shutter for all capture modes. This design choice leverages the speed and stacked structure of the sensor, allowing silent operation, flash sync up to 1/200 sec, and high-speed sync functions.

Enhanced Portrait Capabilities

Designed with portrait photography in mind, the Z8 enhances the sensor’s capabilities with tools and functions to refine portraits, including fine-tuning hue and brightness while shooting, skin softening for up to three subjects, and intuitive manual white balance control.

Fast and Intelligent Autofocus

Featuring a 493-Point Phase-Detection AF system, covering the full sensor area, the Z8 ensures fast and accurate focusing. Utilizing deep learning technology, the camera recognizes various subjects, even in low-light conditions, with a Starlight mode permitting focusing down to -9 EV. Eye-Detection AF is refined for improved accuracy, making it versatile for different subject shapes and sizes.

Video Powerhouse

A robust video performer, the Z8 supports internal 8K60 and 4K120 recording, matching the Z9’s capabilities. Internal 12-bit N-RAW and ProRes RAW video recording further enhances color grading flexibility. The camera also supports ProRes and H.265 10-bit recording, and a range of recording tools and functions are incorporated for professional video production.

Sleek Professional Body Design

Deemed the successor to the D850 DSLR, the Z8 is 30% smaller than the Z9 and 15% smaller than the D850. The modular design allows for day-to-day shooting or pairing with the optional MB-N12 Power Battery Pack grip for improved ergonomics. The camera incorporates dual card slots, eco-friendly materials, premium weather sealing, and in-body Vibration Reduction for up to 6 stops of compensation.

Real-Live Viewfinder and Four-Axis Tilting LCD

The Z8 features an advanced EVF with a 3.69m-dot OLED panel and a four-axis tilting touchscreen LCD, ensuring clear visibility and versatile shooting angles.

Versatile Connectivity

With a full array of connectivity options, including HDMI, headphone and microphone ports, USB-C, and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, the Z8 caters to diverse workflow needs.

In summary, the Nikon Z8 stands as a compact and powerful imaging tool, combining flagship technology with a sleek design for versatile and high-quality photographic and videographic experiences.
