Description

Overview of the Nikon Z6 II

The Nikon Z6 II embodies increased speed, versatility, and performance, representing an upgraded iteration of the versatile mirrorless camera catering to top-tier photo and video applications. Despite numerous enhancements, the Z6 II maintains its familiar design and renowned image quality, catering to multimedia professionals.

24.5MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor and Dual EXPEED 6 Processors

Equipped with a 24.5MP BSI CMOS sensor, the camera delivers exceptional performance across various shooting scenarios, boasting impressive low-light capabilities and rapid readout speeds beneficial for continuous shooting, filmmaking, and time-lapse capture. The sensor’s back-illuminated design ensures clean, high-sensitivity output, reducing noise at high ISO levels (up to native ISO 51200) while maintaining vividness and smoothness at ISO 100. Dual EXPEED 6 image processors significantly enhance the camera’s speed, supporting continuous shooting at 14 fps for up to 124 consecutive frames.

UHD 4K Video Recording

The Z6 II leverages its sensor and processors not only for still imagery but also for high-quality multimedia. It facilitates UHD 4K video recording with full pixel readout at up to 30p, while Full HD 1080p video recording extends to 120p for smooth slow-motion playback. Video files can be stored internally or as uncompressed files via HDMI out to an optional external recorder.

The camera offers advanced video functionalities, including N-Log gamma for capturing footage with enhanced dynamic range and HLG (HDR) for recording HDR-ready content. Additionally, it provides options for high-quality 10-bit data output over HDMI and features like Focus Peaking and Zebra Stripes for manual focus control and exposure monitoring. Audio recording can be managed through the built-in stereo microphone or an external mic via the 3.5mm stereo jack, along with live monitoring via the headphone jack.

Firmware version 1.10 unlocks UHD 4K recording at 60p and 50p frame rates, enables raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist external recorders, and enhances eye-detection performance in Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF modes.

273-Point Phase-Detect AF System & Vibration Reduction

The camera houses 273 phase-detect autofocus points on the sensor, covering 90% of the image area vertically and horizontally, ensuring swift and precise focusing for both photos and videos. Hybrid AF seamlessly switches between phase- and contrast-detect systems for smooth focus during video capture. The NIKKOR Z lenses, optimized for silent operation, complement this system.

The in-body 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction compensates for up to 5 stops of camera shake, compatible with Z-type lenses and adapted F-mount lenses (via the FTZ Adapter), offering 3-axis stabilization.

Body Design

Featuring a large 3.2″ 2.1m-dot tilting touchscreen LCD and a 3.6m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, the Z6 II provides clear image playback and live view shooting, ensuring comfortable eye-level viewing with sharpness and clarity. The top panel integrates a dot-matrix OLED display for quick access to essential camera settings.

The camera is equipped with one CFexpress Type B/XQD card slot and one UHS-II SD card slot, allowing flexible file storage options such as repetitive, overflow, or segregated storage. Its robust magnesium alloy chassis offers dust and weather resistance, ideal for challenging shooting conditions.

The ergonomic grip, anti-slip material, and joystick enhance handling during extended use. Built-in SnapBridge connectivity enables effortless transfer of low-resolution images, remote shooting, and firmware updates via BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi.

Second Generation Z

The Z6 II builds upon its predecessor by enhancing speed, processing power, and versatility without compromising the original camera’s key attributes.

The camera’s Dual EXPEED 6 image processors boost buffer performance, enabling a faster 14 fps continuous shooting rate and reduced blackout times in the viewfinder.

Updated autofocus now includes Eye and Face Detection for humans and animals in the Wide-Area AF mode, catering to both photo and video recording.

Timed long exposure shooting extends up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without an external remote.

Dual memory card slots offer versatile file storage capabilities, and a USB Type-C port allows in-camera charging or continuous power for extended shooting sessions.

The camera offers various creative shooting modes, including Multiple Exposure, 20 Picture Control settings, in-camera Timelapse recording, and Focus Shift mode for focus stacking.

Furthermore, the Z6 II is compatible with the optional MB-N11 Power Battery Pack, providing additional battery life and improved handling.

Z6 II Firmware Ver. 1.30 (Released 10/19/2021)

The firmware update introduces new features like Portrait Impression Balance items, shooting display during tilted image review, voice memo recording, and compatibility enhancements with various accessories like flash units for remote flash photography.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens:

Nikon’s NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens offers a versatile zoom range, catering from wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. With a consistent f/4 maximum aperture, it ensures uniform exposure across the zoom range while presenting a more lightweight alternative to f/2.8 zoom lenses. The lens boasts an optical design featuring a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element and three aspherical elements, effectively reducing chromatic aberrations and distortions for superior image sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range. The incorporation of Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings effectively controls flare and ghosting, enhancing contrast and color rendition in various lighting conditions.

Its autofocus system, powered by a stepping motor, delivers swift, silent, and accurate performance suitable for both photography and videography. The lens incorporates a programmable control ring, allowing intuitive adjustments to camera and exposure settings. Its retractable barrel, devoid of buttons, enables a more compact form factor when the lens is not in use.

  • Versatile zoom covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives, designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
  • Constant f/4 maximum aperture ensures consistent performance and contributes to its lightweight and compact design.
  • Optical design includes unique elements to minimize aberrations, distortions, and flare for edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
  • Nano Crystal Coat and Super Integrated Coating reduce reflections, enhancing contrast and minimizing flare and ghosting.
  • Stepping motor enables smooth, quiet, and rapid autofocus, with full-time manual focus override.
  • Programmable Control Ring offers customization for adjusting manual focus, aperture, or exposure compensation.
  • Electromagnetic aperture mechanism ensures exposure control stability, particularly beneficial for fast continuous shooting.
  • Seven-blade rounded diaphragm for pleasing out-of-focus rendering, ideal for shallow depth of field techniques.
  • Fluorine coating on exposed elements protects against dust, grease, and water droplets.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant construction supports usage in challenging conditions.
  • Retractable design maintains a compact build when not in use.

Overview of Nikon FTZ II:
