Overview of the FUJIFILM GFX 50S II

Authored by Matt Cottom from B&H Photo

The FUJIFILM GFX 50S II stands out as a medium format mirrorless camera offering a remarkable blend of convenience and versatility. This camera, despite being medium format, boasts compactness and portability. Equipped with a 51.4MP CMOS sensor and an enhanced X-Processor 4 image processor, it delivers files characterized by an incredibly wide dynamic range, high resolution, and an expanded sensitivity range of ISO 50-102400, ideal for challenging lighting conditions. The sensor’s ample size creates a distinct three-dimensional appearance with exceptionally smooth tonal and color transitions.

A notable addition to the GFX 50S II is the five-axis in-body image stabilization system, compensating for up to 6.5 stops of camera shake. This enhancement greatly improves handheld shooting, opening up expansive creative opportunities, particularly with slower shutter speeds. For composing shots, a 3.69m-dot electronic viewfinder offers high-resolution eye-level viewing, while the rear 3.2″ 2.36m-dot touchscreen LCD, featuring a versatile three-way tilting design, facilitates shooting from various angles. Furthermore, the camera’s magnesium alloy construction ensures both lightweight durability and resistance to dust, weather, and freezing temperatures down to 14°F, suitable for challenging environments.

Key Features of the FUJIFILM GFX 50S II

  • 51.4MP CMOS Sensor and X-Processor 4:

The camera employs a large 43.8 x 32.9mm 51.4MP CMOS sensor and an upgraded X-Processor 4, delivering high-resolution 14-bit stills with an extensive ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to ISO 50-102400). The pixel size efficiently gathers light, resulting in smoother tonal and color transitions, typical of a medium format appearance. Additionally, various traditional medium and large format aspect ratios are available, alongside the standard 4:3 ratio. The camera also supports continuous shooting up to 3 fps and Full HD 1080p video recording at different frame rates.

  • Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization:

A standout feature is the in-body image stabilization system, compensating for up to 6.5 stops of camera shake, allowing photographers more flexibility with slower shutter speeds.

  • 117-Point Autofocus System:

An improved 117-point autofocus system ensures sharp and precise focus, even in challenging scenarios such as subject tracking or identifying faces within a crowd.

Additional Camera Features:

  • FUJIFILM G lens mount with a short focal flange distance for lens adaptability and enhanced edge-to-edge sharpness.
  • Film Simulation modes replicating 19 FUJIFILM film types, alongside adjustable Grain Effect and Classic Chrome effect for customized imagery.
  • Mechanical and electronic shutter options supporting shutter speeds ranging from 60 minutes to 1/16000 sec.
  • Dual SD memory card slots enabling various saving options and file organization.
  • Tethered shooting capabilities with compatible software for remote editing and control.

Body Design:

  • 3.69m-dot electronic viewfinder with high resolution and 0.77x magnification.
  • 3.2″ 2.36m-dot touchscreen LCD for playback, menu navigation, and live view shooting.
  • LCD monitor on the top plate for settings confirmation and exposure data display.

Additional Specifications:

  • Single NP-W235 rechargeable lithium-ion battery providing approximately 440 shots per charge.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi for direct file sharing and remote camera control via a connected mobile device.
